NTIEC Receives Grant to Promote Careers in HealthcareNTIEC recently received a $10,000 grant from AllOne Charities for our “Rural Healthcare Career Initiative” program for students in grades 8-12. The healthcare sector has historically found it very difficult to staff the many positions that are open due to an aging workforce and the lack of students wanting to remain in the area. NTIEC is eager to help address this critical shortage of healthcare workers in Wyoming, Susquehanna and Bradford Counties. The purpose of the grant is to bring healthcare professionals and students together so that students can explore first-hand, the various career opportunities available to them right here in northeast PA. For more information about the programs NTIEC offers, contact Deb Tierney at 570-278-5038 or via email at [email protected].

Wellsboro High School Senior Receives NTIEC's Outstanding School-to-Work AwardOn March 25, 2021, Joseph Vandergift, a student from Wellsboro Area High School, was presented with NTIEC's Outstanding School-to-Work (STW) Award along with a scholarship. Through NTIEC’s STW program, Joseph is able to work part-time at Owlett’s, a feed and supply store in Wellsboro, PA. Carrie Bradley, NTIEC’s western region educational coordinator, was able to present Joseph with his check in person at Owlett’s! On the STW program, Joseph said, “Working with the public all the time has given me more communication skills and it has opened my eyes to a lot more things I wouldn’t have gotten to see anywhere else.” Craig Owlett, the business owner and operations manager, also had something to say about NTIEC’s STW program. “School-to-work has helped (Owlett’s) by bringing in an extra hand and giving (Joseph) a chance to learn what we do while we do it. I don’t think STW is used nearly enough and I encourage any other business to participate. It’s very valuable to the student and the business.” A big thank you to Craig and Owlett’s and a huge congratulations to Joseph on a job well done! NTIEC couldn’t do what we do for our community if not for supportive businesses like Owlett’s and driven students like Joseph!

Two seniors, one junior and two sophomores from Blue Ridge, Abington Heights and Susquehanna Community had the amazing opportunity to work with Ms. Joyce Malicky, the volunteer coordinator at Wayne Memorial and a variety of healthcare professionals to receive a safe but hands-on education about a variety of jobs in the medical field during the pandemic. Bethany Burns, Amelia Farry, Gracey Hinkley, Cadence Lusk and Hannah McCarthy were able to rotate through several departments that included the maternity ward, same day surgery, the ICU, the lab and imaging during their visits. So you want to be a surgeon! What would it be like to be a surgeon? Well, one of our students was able to find this out! Amelia Farry, a senior at Abington Heights, had the opportunity to witness first-hand two orthopedic surgeries at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale! Amelia started a seven-week externship earlier this month through NTIEC’s hospital externship program. She is currently interested in becoming an orthopedic surgeon, so this was an opportunity of a life-time for her. On the experience of being in the OR during the procedures, Amelia had this to say: “It was a truly amazing experience...I was a bit nervous but everyone made me feel extremely comfortable and welcomed!”
NTIEC loves helping students in the area gain experience in their target field and we are so glad Amelia enjoyed her experience at Wayne Memorial! NTIEC Makes a Virtual Visit to a Local High SchoolNTIEC visited Forest City Regional High School, virtually that is, last Thursday to talk to juniors in Ms. Erdmann's Public Speaking and Career Preparedness class about finding careers that are right for them, work/life balances, and offered the students job shadowing and internship/externship opportunities. Deb Tierney and Colin Furneaux gave a super insightful and collaborative presentation to approximately 30 students in a two different sessions to help students discuss their interests, passions, and talents and how they relate to careers they are interested in. The students were extremely cooperative and eager to share their passions, values and career targets with Deb and Colin. The students also had a lot of important questions for people in their target majors and careers, like whether or not they enjoyed their jobs after the years of education and tough situations, and how taxing the job is on their personal lives. Students were passionate about family, animals, helping others, and politics and showed a lot of diversity in interests, talents, passions and career goals. Deb and Colin both enjoyed getting to know the students at Forest City and always love to help students think outside the box about their careers.

Outstanding Youth Apprentice Awards Announced At the end of each academic year, NTIEC honors several students who participate in the youth apprenticeship program with the Outstanding Youth Apprentice Award. These students have gone above and beyond during the year while working in their local communities. Each of these students have dedicated themselves to learning beyond the classroom, while developing skills needed for their future endeavors. Their commitment to learning and growing has been evident as they have all received top-notch reviews from their employers. This year, four students were selected to receive a certificate and a $100 scholarship. Congratulations to all four recipients on a job well done!
As a senior at Williamson High School, Scott Draper, just completed his second year in the school-to-work internship program. He worked for a family-owned business, Draper Supply in Millerton, as well as for Williams Construction. Scott is a hard working student who realized that he could learn so much out in the community through work-based learning opportunities. He agrees that learning beyond the classroom is what has allowed him to propel into his future. Scott plans to continue working for both businesses upon graduation. Heather Johnson is not your average senior. She is set to graduate from the Mountain View Jr/Sr High School this month. To enhance her last academic year, Heather choose to complete a work-based learning placement with NTIEC. She turned her job as a waitress at Jenny Leigh’s Country Cookin into a paid internship. This allowed her to gain work-based experience and earn academic credit. Heather used this experience to build confidence and display a commanding posture when interacting with customers. All of this fits nicely into her stated career pathway in healthcare. Heather will be attending Luzerne Community College for nursing in the fall. One Internship was not enough for Jeremiah Schwartz., a senior from Mountain View Jr/Sr High School. To leverage his work experience, Jeremiah choose to complete a work-based learning placement with NTIEC. He combined his love of the outdoors, working with animals and an interest in environmental education to create a career exploration experience. He turned his job at the Ransomed Ransom Farms into a paid internship. Two afternoons per week, Jeremiah also worked at an unpaid internship at the Susquehanna County Conservation Office on soil management plans for local farmers. Jeremiah plans to go to college, in the future, for environmental studies. Ethan Slettler is a senior at Mansfield-North Penn High School and is working at Sheetz in Mansfield, PA. Ethan is described by the store manager as a “dependable, hard-working young man who we are thankful to have here in our store.” Ethan works as much as possible, all while having a smile on his face. He is learning skills in customer service, food preparation, safety and more! He is dedicated to his work and learning as much as possible. Ethan’s future plans include attending Mansfield University and continuing to work for Sheetz. June 11, 2020

Veterinary Externship FormedNTIEC is dedicated to bringing new programs to our students and we are continuously establishing partnerships with professionals across the northern tier. Rachel Saxton, a junior at Lackawanna Trail, sat in on a lecture series that NTIEC hosted where the speaker of the month was Dr. Jessica Freda from Dalton Veterinary Associates. Rachel was so intrigued by Dr. Freda that she requested a job shadow opportunity with the veterinarian. NTIEC arranged for Rachael to spend a couple of hours with Dr. Freda and the staff at Dalton Veterinary Associates. She got to experience first hand what it is like to work in a veterinary hospital. Rachel enjoyed the experience so much that she requested a second job shadow. NTIEC did one better! We approached Dr. Freda and asked if the animal hospital would be willing to engage in a six-week externship program to benefit Rachael and other students like her. The veterinary externship program started the end of February.

Students Learn About Careers in Healthcare During Summer ProgramHealthcare professions are one of the fastest growing careers today in NEPA. NTIEC hosted its annual Healthcare Career Experience for local high school students in the northern tier the week of July 15. Participants spent five days learning about careers available to them in the healthcare industry. During the week, the students toured Wyoming County 911 Center and Tyler Memorial Hospital in Tunkhannock. The students traveled to Scranton and spent a day at the Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine (GCSOM) where they had the distinct honor of meeting Dr. Gerald Tracy (cardiologist, professor of medicine and a founding member of the medical school). They learned about the heart first hand from Dr. Tracy and were afforded the opportunity to dissect a sheep's heart. Later in the week they visited Endless Mountains Health Systems and Pivot Physical Therapy in Montrose and Southtown Veterinary Hospital (also located in Montrose) where they witnessed first-hand surgical procedures being performed on several cats. On the last day of the program, all the students became certified in “Stop the Bleed”, thanks to Ms. Gail Malloy, RN, LNC from Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.
